Dan Brisse is probably one of my favorite snowboarders right now. Not for his death defying antics in the street or above alleyways.... Not for charging gaps like no tomorrow... It's for his spirit of believing in himself and following those convictions. This year he is a contender for repeat Gold in ESPN's Real Snow X- Games contest and filming his own web series with Justin Turkowski (aka Teen Wolf) for Volcom. I'm really proud of these guys from watching them grow when they first came to Utah and looking forward to seeing what they will achieve.

Frequent Flier Miles

This fall I went to the Photo Expo in New York, Vincent Laforet happened to be speaking at the Canon Display and delivered quite a few tips about aerial shooting. He explained on a majority of his air shoots he uses a 500mm to create a miniaturized effect and compress the subject. Most people get too wrapped up in the panorama effect of being in the air and totally neglect the other possibilities. I filed it away with random facts that i'd probably wouldn't be using anytime soon... yet....

A few weeks ago i got a last minute phone call from my friend Wiley Miller asking if I wanted to go flying. With a half hour's notice, I threw my stuff together and we were off. Most of these were shot on 5D Mark II with a 70-200. It was pretty run and gun style. I didn't know where were going, or how long the flight would last. We were pretty tight in a cessna. I'm 6'2" and 230 lbs so 3 of us in a tiny plane looked like a clown car for air travel. For some of the shots it was impossible to look thru the eyepiece so I used liveview and positioned the camera however I could. Making sure sure not to bump Wiley's controls.

All in all it was a nice day to go Top Gun with some friends and check out some different perspectives. Enjoy!

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

I never seem to have enough time to get everything done for Christmas time - between presents, friends, holiday cards, ugly sweater parties etc - the time just flies by. But this fall some friends asked if I had any clever ideas for a Christmas card?

Did i ever ! Soon we had a Santa suit, cookies, and note to Kris Kringle himself.

The only odd part - it was October in southern california. Unfortunately we had to tell a little fib to explain Santa hangin around at the beach in the fall and finding a suit that early wasn't exactly easy but we made it work. The girls were excited, the parents were stoked to have something different and I hope if you are lucky to get one of these cards - it makes you smile.

Last winter i had an amazing opportunity to work with Louie Vito and Kicker to create a fun video that showcased his spinning and twirling abilities. Louie was awesome to work with. Besides being one of the nicest people on the planet, he was always cracking jokes and had the crew laughing constantly. Seeing him progress from a grom when he first moved to Utah to a halfpipe powerhouse that he is now has been quite the transformation. Last week i took a mini vacation and headed up to Santa Barbara with my friend Zach. On the drive up from LA he's telling me about how he and the wife are looking for a new reliable vehicle. Warranties, Customer Satisfaction, Reliability etc. etc. Five minutes after our arrival at his in laws he beckons to follow him and leads me out to the yard, pulling the tarp off this beauty.

Like cinderella, cast aside from the grand ball this thing collects dust and sheds a tear every time a Prius drives by... I hope Zach heeds my advice and bypasses form and function for the sake of classic style. Otherwise i may need to go rescue this princess.....

There is a defined element of danger for cliff drops - rocks to clear or certain doom. After watching Louie Vito on "Dancing with the Stars" you would think he would want take it easy and coast - cashing in on covers of gossip mags but the kid loves to snowboard. Given the opportunity to ride backcountry, far away from the dance floor or the halfpipe he'll surprise you with a nasty drop.

Dinner between friends can lead to some unlikely photo shoots.

I was showing my friend Becca Rydman some recent portrait work on my iphone and jokingly she asked if I’d ever be interested in shooting some lifestyles of her maternity line. I had to remind her that I am an equal opportunity photographer. I shoot any and all things.

Two days later jokes became reality as I was rolling around in a little Salt Lake City Bayou shooting pregnant and not so pregnant ladies. The first day went well with partial sun. The second morning – pouring rain. Nothing a few elinchom rangers couldn’t fix for counterfeit light as long we kept electrocution out of the mix.

The rain let up a bit and we managed to crank out some shots quickly (the one of the model on the log was actually the first test shot).

Thanks to Cory, Regina and Erin for being troopers in the rain.

Extra special thanks to Becca and Kristy. You two are fun, passionate and awesome to work with. Your only shortcoming - not being quite as tall as the models.

I just recently bought a new mt bike so i have been slightly obsessed with bunny hopping. This structure is just down the street and i had been dying to shoot it. Lucking old school shred homie, Ali Goulet lives nearby and is into stunting for the camera (between breakfast with his parents, taking his kid to the skate park and sending the wifey shopping when we got done) I was happy to get this one done and now Ali's kid has a rad photo for show and tell.

The hazards of shred photography are very real. The other day I witnessed this photographer cartwheel though all those rocks. I thought for sure he would be dead when he stopped but miraculously he was unscathed. Definitely one of the nine lives gone. While most think our jobs are all fun and games it can be really dangerous. Go hug a shred photographer or cinematographer today and thank them for risking their necks to bring back cool images of living the dream.

Back when i was a newbie in Montana Jason Schutz taught me a million ways to almost kill myself/ i.e. get myself into really hairy situations on a snowboard. Chris Ankeny was a young ripper charging lines at Bridger Bowl. These guys taught me a lot about safety and appreciation of the mountains. Due to their influence I learned alot about taking photos in gnarly places and having fun the whole time. I figured by now since we are all old and crusty they would of slowed down. When i saw this i was blown away! So stoked to see these rad dads killing it. Much respect to Chris and Schutzy.....

I rarely get to spend time with my family during the winter. My Mom and Dad are always curious why I'm so busy during the winter since i've never had a "real" job. My Dad was out for a few days last week and i think after seeing my funny schedule he kinda understood.
For years i've had all this expensive equipment but never really took a photo of him. So we drank some whiskey, set up the lights, shot some photos and had a good father /son evening of shooting the shit also.

Spending Time in The Hole

Last week Christmas came early. I was on a location shoot for Red Bull to capture some portraits of Travis Rice. For those that don’t know, He is in perpetually motion…. so It’s not the easiest task to try and get him to stand still. Luckily we had been discussing different photo ideas for months and it was more of a collaborative effort to really capture some of his personality often not seen. Still Travis is always full of surprises ( a trampoline, a snow ninja suit with matching snowmobile, fireworks, and him dressing up as my long lost brotha from anotha motha to name a few)

Hours were long but antics were high and I will say it was one of the most fun, productive shoots I’ve been a part of. The kid does not sleep – from hitting the office at Asymbol, going over new gear at Brainfarm, to shredding some laps at the mountain. Being in Jackson and around that many creative people was really inspiring and hopefully the pictures will show that. Below are a few outtakes from behind the scenes.

There’s really too many people to thank for making it happen but …Thanks – Travis, Ryan Snyder, Brain Farm, Asymbol, Jackson Hole Resort, Austin Holt, Mike Parillo, Brody for making me laugh, Evan and Say for one of the more entertaining dinners in a while!

24 hours with Kaya

It's funny meeting someone after talking to them on and off for almost a year. After trading schedules, injuries (randomly enough, we both hurt our knees) and electronic correspondence I finally met this lady. All because within 24 hrs of meeting her, I needed to create photo and video piece exemplifying her personality. How would be start? Simple

"Lets go grab a beer and tell me about yourself."

Within that 24 hours I learned that Kaya was funny, determined, passionate, a philosopher of sorts and she will commandeer your car stereo without hesitation.

It was a fun photo shoot to say the least and with such an amazing crew (Jeremy, Balls, Gigi and of course Kaya) it made me remember why i love my job.

Fight Club

Fight Club.... almost sounds like a joke in 2010... Apparently it is still very real. During a late night in NYC, some new found friends suggested we go check it out. The idea was almost comical but things ended up being more than i bargained for. 3 flights up a sketchy stairway, a hussle at the door then led to modern day gladiators bashing it out to a techno dj, plus a few sideline bars that looked like something erected from prohibition. Beautiful foreign models, Hipsters. Wall Street traders, cheap vodka, and a referee! For a moment i thought "it would be fun to get in the ring" but i corrected that momentary lapse in judgement as soon as some blood splattered the crowd. So I proceeded to party like it was 1999 instead. Things got blurry from there but I know we ended up having a late night dance party at a bar behind a bar. Old school dance moves came out till I saw the sun rise from the 10th floor in the East Village. It was like waking from a dream - NYC can put the hurt on pretty quickly. I was glad to have survived.

yup you probably have heard him on the HBO show "How To Make it in America" well i actually heard him on the Kid Cudi / Dj Green Lantern mix tape. Then I checked out the show. Out of Random luck I was scanning my facebook page and Miss Annie Aschim had posted he was playing in SLC. Super busy - yes. Slammed beyond belief - Indeed. Soul music in SLC? Once in a lifetime so i cleared my schedule. I called the funkiest white boy i knew, who wouldn't ask to many questions. Mr Austin Holt and inquired if he was up for a tues night adventure? He was down. Aloe Blacc tore the roof off!
People got down and Danielle even brought her polaroid camera. The next day i had to meet with my accountant. I was haggard but that my friends is another story... Long live the Soul!

I've never been a fan of funerals.

I guess this all stems from unexpectedly having to attend one for my sister at an early age.

Today i had to say goodbye to another friend....
and it was awkward.

Life can come at you pretty fast sometimes. This was my saturday... When a nature drive and snowmobile roop almost took a turn for the worst. Funny, i was mostly pissed when it happened and it took me almost a full day to realize if those pretty aspen trees hadn't caught me i would have would have certainly continued 5oo feet down a cliff. Chalk it up as another day at the office but man the office can be hectic sometimes.

Lily and the Christmas Cheer

So i was going thru my recent photos on my point and shoot and i came across these of Lily. For those that don't know Lily is the oldest daughter of my friends the Hoefer's. She is a magical and precocious little girl that deems me as her best friend and appointed play partner when she comes to visit.

I'm okay with that...

So she managed to not only clean up from Santa this Christmas but also at the dinner table with that slab of meat.

Now this little girl has the world at her fingertips.... Doting parents, a cute little sister Piper, a cabin in the woods and a house a the beach and two lovely pooches, a pile of toys that would make elves blush...

Yet when I arrived unannounced on christmas without a present under the tree. Lily didn't utter a word. she just wandered off and grabbed an empty stocking from the fireplace. Then came back and placed it in my lap, telling me to look inside. She said she felt bad because they hadn't got a present for me, so she gave me one of her old teddy bears stuffed deep in the stocking.

Now Mr. Bear was in some bad shape, missing an eye and a leg but that is the beauty of child.

It was by far the best Christmas Present I've received in a long time.

Christmas Carols, long lines, half ornamented trees, lack of sleep, missing my fam, trying to stay warm, good food, whiskey, sweaters, snow, dogs, frosted trees, icy roads, sleeping in, naps. It's that time of the year and i'm thankful. For another year, another breath and time to reflect.
